Dr. Sarita Verma brings her expertise in medical education to MCC

April 11, 2025

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Sarita Verma has joined the organization as executive advisor. Dr. Verma, the former dean, president, and CEO of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University, joined the organization in a part-time capacity on April 1. She steps into a role that will see her drawing on her expertise in medical education, health human resources (HHR), primary care and health systems reform, while fostering and strengthening strategic alliances. She will also be advising on key projects.

“We are absolutely delighted that Dr. Verma has agreed to share her expertise with the MCC,” says Dr. Viren Naik, CEO of the MCC. “Her breadth of experience in education and governance, as well as her highly regarded commitment to championing diversity and equity, will help us make better decisions, forge new relationships, and generally further our work supporting safe, accessible health care in Canada.”

Dr. Verma is a family physician and lawyer who has also served as a Canadian diplomat. Her academic appointments include vice-president, Education at the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, as well as deputy dean and associate vice-provost, Relations with Health Care Institutions in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. For six years, Dr. Verma served as a governor at the University of Toronto, and with many other organizations, including Women’s College Hospital, North York General Hospital, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, the Health Sciences North Research Institute, the Canadian Residency Medical Matching Service, and the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, among others. She has also worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan and Ethiopia.

Dr. Verma is the third physician to join the MCC in an advisory role. Dr. Jason R. Frank, who joined in October 2024, has been supporting the development of the MCC’s workplace-based assessment (WBA) program, while Dr. Filipe Santos, who joined in March 2025, is supporting the organization in better assisting international medical graduates (IMGs) as they navigate to practising as physicians in Canada. All three appointments have aligned with objectives outlined in the MCC’s 2024-2027 strategic plan, including serving physician licensure, assisting IMGs, and strengthening strategic alliances.
