The Medical Council of Canada welcomes AMEE attendees to learn more about what we do

We are proud to have Dr. André De Champlain, the Medical Council of Canada (MCC)’s Director of Psychometrics and Assessment Services, and Dr. Claire Touchie, Chief Medical Education Officer at the MCC, as presenters at this year’s annual conference #AMEE2019. Dr. De Champlain is sharing his expertise on the subject of: basic statistics for the medical educator – a problem-based learning approach, while Dr. Touchie co-presents with colleagues from the Netherlands, United States and Switzerland on the use of technology to capture and report about entrustable professional activities.

The Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) is a membership organisation that helps teachers, doctors, researchers, administrators, curriculum developers, assessors and students keep up to date with developments in the rapidly changing world of medical education.

At the MCC, we strive to achieve the highest level of medical care for Canadians through excellence in the assessment of physicians. We assess over 11,000 Canadian and international medical students and graduates every year through our examinations, offered in both official languages in Canada and in 80 other countries. The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part I, one of the requirements for licensure, was administered to candidates around the world for the first time in May 2019. This change was the stimulus for the MCC to develop a suite of high-quality preparatory products aimed at assisting international and Canadian medical graduates and students to be well prepared for the exam. As the delivery of health care evolves rapidly, so, too, do the competencies that are expected of medical professionals. The new MCCQE Part I Blueprint, launched with the administration in Spring 2018, aligns examination content with current health-care needs and best practices in medical education. The MCC is expanding the assessment of physicians beyond education and training to assessment along the continuum of a medical career and has recently completed its first year of offering a critical component of in-practice evaluation: multi-source feedback. Learn more about the National Assessment Collaboration Practice-Ready Assessment (NAC PRA) programs, which assesses international physicians for up to three months to determine whether they are safe and competent to practise in Canada. Successful physicians can apply for a provisional license with their province’s medical regulatory authority, allowing experienced international physicians an alternate route to Canadian practice.
