Statement of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples in Canada

June 4, 2021

The Medical Council of Canada acknowledges the systemic racism that led to the tragic deaths of 215 children whose bodies were discovered in an unmarked mass grave at the Kamloops Indian Residential School. We offer our deepest condolences to all Indigenous families and communities affected by the discovery.

We are supporting partners in responding to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice, through our participation in the National Consortium on Indigenous Medical Education (NCIME).

We will continue to build cultural safety within our organization and the broader health care system as we achieve the highest level of medical care in Canada through the assessment of physicians.
