Prince Edward Island becomes the seventh province to join pan-Canadian application portal for medical registration

Ottawa – The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island (CPSPEI) announced today that Prince Edward Island is now accepting applications for medical registration through the national portal, physiciansapply.ca. Prince Edward Island is the first of several provinces to integrate physiciansapply.ca into its application process in early 2017, and the seventh medical regulatory jurisdiction in Canada to do so overall.

physiciansapply.ca is a centralized system for exam registration that also receives, reviews, verifies and stores the credentials and documents of candidates from across Canada and around the world. Candidates are able to securely and easily apply for MCC exams, view exam results, submit credentials and documents for verification, access a translation service for medical credentials, and send applications to specific Canadian jurisdictions.

“We are pleased to join the ranks of the six other provinces who are accepting applications through this portal,” said Dr. Cyril A. Moyse, Registrar of the CPSPEI. “As well as making it easier for candidates to access services from across the medical community, physiciansapply.ca will facilitate our ability to review applications, and provide a consistent pathway for physicians entering the system.”

The project was funded by Employment and Social Development Canada, the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada and its members, and the MCC.

The application for medical registration is now open to all new candidates for independent registration in Prince Edward Island. Those candidates include Canadian medical residents, practising physicians relocating from other Canadian jurisdictions to Prince Edward Island, and physicians from outside of the country.

“We are extremely pleased to have the CPSPEI using the application for medical registration process,” said Dr. Ian Bowmer, Executive Director of the MCC. “We are looking forward to introducing Prince Edward Island physicians to the integrated and streamlined medical registration process in physiciansapply.ca.”

Once the process is fully deployed across Canada, candidates will be able to use the system to apply to one or more jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction will continue to assess and process applications based on its own legislation and policies.
