Available to watch: the MCC’s webinar Preparing for practice in Canada – Ethical and cultural perspectives for IMGs and ITPs

March 5, 2026

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC)’s webinar, Preparing for practice in Canada – Ethical and cultural perspectives for IMGs and ITPs, is now available for viewing.

The webinar covered a variety of topics related to the ethical and cultural competencies international medical graduates (IMGs) and internationally trained physicians (ITPs) need to both successfully practise medicine in Canada and navigate the MCC examinations.

The 90-minute session, which took place on February 24, emphasized that preparing for practice in Canada requires more than strong clinical knowledge. Speakers highlighted expectations related to patient-centred communication, Indigenous cultural safety, equity, diversity and inclusion, confidentiality, informed consent, and professional boundaries—areas that can feel unfamiliar or ambiguous for physicians trained outside Canada.

__________

Panellists Dr. Armand Aalamian, executive director, Safe Medical Care and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) with the Canadian Medical Protective Association, Dr. Lucy Shantel Nakibuuka, manager of the Policy, Advocacy, and Research Committee with Internationally Trained Physicians of Canada, and Dr. Filipe Santos, IMG consultant with the MCC, shared both their professional insights and their lived experiences. The panel unpacked common knowledge gaps and misconceptions, including myths about who struggles most with ethical issues in practice, also looking at sample examination and practice scenarios to demonstrate how candidates are expected to apply ethical reasoning in clinical contexts.
