The Medical Council of Canada (MCC), the trusted keeper of physician credentials and assessor of a physician’s general competencies to inform safe licensure decisions in Canada, is recruiting one member to join its volunteer Council for a three-year term. Specifically, the MCC is seeking a public member with experience in digital governance and data strategy and a background in leadership, business acumen, and board governance. We are committed to Council diversity to bring different perspectives and ideas.
The MCC ensures that physicians have the competencies to support safe, accessible health care in Canada. Annually, the MCC engages close to 30,000 students, graduates, and physicians as part of their pathway towards the practice of medicine in Canada. This includes the assessment of medical students through its qualifying examination in Canada as well as more than 80 other countries in person via remote proctoring.
The MCC Council consists of up to 12 councillors, including:
The term of office of this position shall be three years, ending in September 2029. This term is eligible for re-election for a second term and a third term, each of up to three years. This position will begin in the fall of 2026.
Councillors are expected to commit the time required to properly perform their duties on the Council and any committee of which they are a member. The minimum time commitment is estimated to be 10-15 hours per quarter. Councillors must fulfill the requirements and responsibilities of their position. This includes, for example, preparing for and attending Council and committee meetings, discharging their fiduciary obligations, and working cooperatively and respectfully with other councillors, officers, staff, and volunteers.
Council meetings are three hours long, typically virtual, and scheduled for the following dates: December 10, 2026, as well as March 25, June 24, September 27-28 (in-person in Ottawa), and December 2, 2027. Additionally, plans are in the works for an in-person meeting in Ottawa on May 19, 2027 to refresh the MCC’s strategic plan, and for a brief governance review on November 4, 2027.
This unpaid volunteer position is a great opportunity for people who are interested in supporting the governance, policy-making, and strategic directions of the MCC and its future. The Council operates with a commitment to guide the strategic initiatives and to implement its vision through excellence in the assessment of physicians.
