The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) has welcomed a new president to lead its Council. Dr. Gordon Giddings was named to the position following the meeting of the members of Council on October 6, 2025. Ms. Levonne Louie has been named vice-president.
“I am honoured to have been chosen as the Medical Council of Canada’s president,” said Dr. Giddings, who has served on Council since 2021 and as a member of the Governance and Nominating Committee. “I look forward to working alongside our chief executive officer, Dr. Viren Naik, and with Council members and our interested parties to ensure that physicians in Canada have the competencies to support safe, accessible health care.”
Dr. Gordon Giddings is currently the Assistant Registrar at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), where he oversees the professional conduct department. He is also the Clinical Content Editor of Pallium Canada’s Palliative Pocketbook and LEAP (Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End-of-Life Care) workshops. He has served as the Canadian Medical Association Journal’s Associate Editor in the Research and Practice departments and has held the role of medical director of the Hospice Waikato and Rainbow Place, New Zealand’s only pediatric hospice.
Ms. Levonne Louie, who has been selected as Council vice-president, has served on several professional regulatory boards, including the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and the Law Society of Alberta. Holding a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Calgary, Ms. Louie, who is retired from the oil and gas sector, has also served on the boards of the Calgary Convention Centre Authority, Alberta Theatre Projects, and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen, among others, and holds the ICD.D designation.
