Call for nominations

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) is seeking one member for its volunteer Council with proven expertise in business leadership, community health, and board governance. We are committed to Council diversity to bring different perspectives and ideas.

Specifically, the MCC is seeking a member in the category of current registrars of provincial or territorial medical regulatory authorities.

The MCC’s mission is to serve as the trusted keeper of physician credentials and assessor of a physician’s general competencies to inform safe licensure decisions in Canada. We ensure that physicians have the competencies to support safe, accessible health care in Canada. We assess close to 10,000 international and Canadian medical students and graduates every year through our examinations, offered in both official languages in Canada and in 80 other countries. Our ongoing support for research and development ensures that we remain at the forefront of innovation in medical assessment.

The Council is responsible for:

  • Establishing processes and schedules for monitoring and assessing performance in areas of the Council’s responsibility
  • Participating in strategic planning in order to inform and update the MCC’s mission, vision and values
  • Ensuring the stewardship of financial resources and monitoring financial performance against the budget
  • Overseeing the Risk Oversight and Management Program and mitigating risks
  • Overseeing the recruitment and performance evaluation of the CEO
  • Appointing individuals with the appropriate skills and experience who are qualified to be Council members
  • Overseeing the overall governance of the affairs of the MCC. Each Council member has a fiduciary duty to act honestly, in good faith and in the best interests of the MCC and in so doing, to support the MCC in fulfilling its mission and discharging its accountability

Term of appointment

The term of office of this position shall be three years ending in September 2028. This term is eligible for re-election for a second term and a third term, each of up to three years. This position will begin in the fall of 2025.

Time commitment

Councillors are expected to commit the time required to properly perform their duties on the Council and any committee of which they are a member. The minimum time commitment is estimated to be 10-15 hours per quarter. Councillors must fulfill the requirements and responsibilities of their position. This includes, for example, preparing for and attending Council and committee meetings, discharging their fiduciary obligations, and working cooperatively and respectfully with other Councillors, officers, staff, and volunteers.

Council meetings are three hours long and scheduled for the following dates: October 6 and December 11, 2025, as well as March 19, June 25, September 28, and December 10, 2026. Additionally, brief governance refresher sessions are planned for October 16, 2025, and October 15, 2026.

This engaging and rewarding volunteer position is a great opportunity for people who are interested in supporting the governance, policy-making and strategic directions of the MCC and its future.   1. Review the MCC Code of Business Conduct, including the Conflict of Interest section, and the MCC By-law.
  2. Complete the online application form:
    • Within the form, you will be asked to submit a detailed letter of interest with a resume outlining relevant experience, qualifications, and any other information you deem important to highlight to the Governance and Nominating Committee.

Next steps

The Governance and Nominating Committee will review applications and determine a short list of candidates they wish to interview. Virtual interviews will be planned for May. Applicants will be notified by June as to whether their names will be brought forward for election by Council.
