Call for nominations

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) is seeking one member for its volunteer Council with a background in medical education, business leadership, community health, and board governance. We are committed to Council diversity to bring different perspectives and ideas.

Specifically, the MCC is seeking a member in the category of experienced medical educator. Given the MCC’s strong ties to Indigenous communities, preference will be given to applicants with an Indigenous background or other connections to Indigenous communities.

The MCC’s mission is to serve as the trusted keeper of physician credentials and assessor of a physician’s general competencies to inform safe licensure decisions in Canada. We ensure that physicians have the competencies to support safe, accessible health care in Canada. We assess close to 10,000 international and Canadian medical students and graduates every year through our examinations, offered in both official languages in Canada and in 80 other countries. Our ongoing support for research and development ensures that we remain at the forefront of innovation in medical assessment.

The Council is responsible for:

  • Establishing processes and schedules for monitoring and assessing performance in areas of the Council’s responsibility
  • Participating in strategic planning in order to inform and update the MCC’s mission, vision and values
  • Ensuring the stewardship of financial resources and monitoring financial performance against the budget
  • Overseeing the Risk Oversight and Management Program and mitigating risks
  • Overseeing the recruitment and performance evaluation of the CEO
  • Appointing individuals with the appropriate skills and experience who are qualified to be Council members
  • Overseeing the overall governance of the affairs of the MCC. Each Council member has a fiduciary duty to act honestly, in good faith and in the best interests of the MCC and in so doing, to support the MCC in fulfilling its mission and discharging its accountability

Term of appointment

The term of office of this position shall fulfill the remainder of a three-year term ending in September 2027. The selected Councillor, as is the case for all appointed Councillors, shall be eligible for re-election for a second term and a third term, each of up to three years or until their successor is elected, except that no Councillor shall serve as a Councillor for more than nine years. This position is expected to begin early in 2025.

Time commitment

Councillors are expected to commit the time required to properly perform their duties on the Council and any committee of which they are a member. The minimum time commitment is estimated to be 10-15 hours per quarter. Councillors must fulfill the requirements and responsibilities of their position. This includes, for example, preparing for and attending Council and committee meetings, discharging their fiduciary obligations, and working cooperatively and respectfully with other Councillors, officers, staff, and volunteers.

Compensation

This engaging and rewarding volunteer position is a great opportunity for people who are interested in supporting the governance, policy-making and strategic directions of the MCC and its future. The Council operates with a commitment to guide the strategic initiatives and to implement its vision through excellence in the assessment of physicians.
