Candidates who completed their Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part I between April 9 and May 21, 2025, can now view their final result (e.g., pass, fail) and total score through their physiciansapply.ca account. The Statement of Results and Supplemental Information Report will be available online in approximately one week.
In July 2025, the MCC conducted a standard-setting exercise with a panel of 23 practising physicians from across the country to establish a new passing score for the MCCQE Part I. The new score of 439 will be reported on a scale ranging from 300 to 600, with a mean of 450 and a standard deviation of 30. This pass score and this scale will be applied to the MCCQE Part I April 2025 session and subsequent exam sessions. They will remain in place until the next standard-setting exercise occurs.
It is best practice to revisit a standard every three to five years, or when there is a change to an examination. In April 2025, the MCCQE Part I was delivered for the first time in its updated format, featuring two sections of multiple-choice questions. The introduction of the new exam’s format required a standard-setting exercise to reestablish the standard and ensure that fair pass and fail decisions are made based on the new structure. Following the detailed and rigorous standard-setting exercise, a panel of physicians recommended a new pass score to the MCC’s Exam Oversight Committee, which reviewed and approved it.
The MCC has informed the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) of the new MCCQE Part I pass score and scale, and their systems have been updated accordingly. For candidates who took the exam in April 2025 or will take it in subsequent sessions, program directors will review applications using the new score and scale. This change does not impact candidates who took the MCCQE Part I before April 2025.
