Acceptable medical schools and medical degrees

Overview

The requirements for an acceptable medical school and acceptable medical degree are defined in the Model Standards for Medical Registration in Canada. Candidates must have obtained or be expected to obtain an acceptable medical degree from an acceptable medical school to be eligible for Medical Council of Canada services and assessments.

An acceptable school is defined as a

• school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory)¹ at the time the candidate completed the program;
  or
• school of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation;
  or
• Canadian or US medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools.

An acceptable medical degree must be from an acceptable school (as defined above) and the medical school listing in the World Directory must have a Canada Sponsor Note.²
