New geriatrics online orientation case study now available

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new case study in the Communication and Cultural Competence orientation program. Case 6, entitled Complexities of care of the elderly, covers a wide range of topics such as consent, multiple illnesses, capacity assessment, substitute decision making and leaving against medical advice. The case takes place in a hospital setting where the patient is assessed by multiple specialists. It features video, audio and text accompanied by reflective exercises and resources. The Communication and Cultural Competence orientation program provides physicians with comprehensive information about Canadian medical practice, and in particular the communication skills and cultural competencies required for patient-centered care. This orientation program, which originally launched on Sept. 23, 2015, includes a Communication Skills Module, as well as case studies covering topics such as mental health, cross-cultural communication, intraprofessional teamwork, Aboriginal health, etc. We’d like to thank Dr. Lynn Russell and the National Assessment Collaboration practice ready assessment programs, specialists and medical regulatory authorities for their input in the development of this new content. We hope you enjoy Case 6 and welcome any feedback.
