Consultations

Since the approval of the Blueprint in 2014, the MCC has been consulting with stakeholders on its implementation.

Following feedback from the faculties of medicine, the MCC has revisited the launch of the MCCQE Part I based on the new Blueprint, and adjusted the timeline to 2018. This will give faculties more time to adapt their curriculum to reflect the areas more prevalent in the new Blueprint, including the dimension related to health promotion and illness prevention.

The MCC is also hosting a series of workshops with undergraduate medical education deans and faculty. Workshop participants are collaborating, among other areas, on exploring assessment elements as part of a comprehensive data set that could be used by the learner and faculty. The goal behind this collaboration is to identify possibilities as to the data elements that should be considered, and how to assess candidates on certain domains that cannot be adequately sampled via point-in-time examinations.

Additionally, the MCC has been consulting with experts on innovative exam formats. The MCC is currently considering including situational judgement items, or short clinical video vignettes, into the MCCQE Part I and the MCCQE Part II. The situational judgement items would enable the MCC to test a wider array of competencies while also ensuring greater comparability across examination sessions.

These collaborations are aimed at shaping the evolution of MCC assessments and are still in preliminary stages. More information will be shared when/if the results of these collaborations will be integrated into the MCC’s assessments and processes.

Consultations prior to Blueprint report approval

The MCC conducted a series of consultations on the draft Blueprint with its stakeholders in the summer and fall of 2013.

While the overall Blueprint and specifications were well received, suggestions were offered throughout the consultations to improve the definitions and clarify certain concepts. This feedback was incorporated into the Blueprint report, which was approved at the MCC’s Annual Meeting on Sept. 16, 2014.
